Re: Budgets

I'm interested in individual item costs, because I don't worry much about my overall budget as long as I'm buying things that I must eat. For example, here are some of the best prices (I can find) in my area (Midwest USA) Bananas, not organic: $0.19/lb Oranges, not organic, though sometimes: ~ $0.99...

Re: Store bought juice

For those in the US, there is a brand called Lakewood (FLA) that sells fresh pressed, albeit pasteurized, pineapple juice. Unfortunately it's calcium enriched, but only 5% DV. It's probably the best tasting pineapple juice I've had, aside from the real thing.

dehydrator plan

an addition to my earlier post:
Here is a plan for Alton Brown's very simple, homemade dehydrator http://www.goodeatsfanpage.com/Season11 ... gbites.htm
He dries fruit and beef, all without a heat source. This may be a good way to have nearly raw dried foods.

Re: 'Dirty' protein & fruit dehydrator

very interesting! I'm glad to hear that dehydrating fish is working for some. Any more reports about this?
Any more particular recommendations or tips?

For those interested, a google search for "homemade dehydrator" returns several hits. This might be my first test before buying one.

Re: Answering: Why do you do it?

Well, I'm certainly not losing sleep over it yet, and I agree with you. I used to offer suggestions on another forum when people asked vegetarian/protein questions, but after posting links to Waisays, I don't seem to have gotten anyone's attention. So, I've mostly given up on that forum haha. It's i...

Answering: Why do you do it?

Hello, I am just wondering how some of you explain your diet to people who are skeptical, disapproving, or just curious. Do you ever try to talk others into trying the diet, or any part of it? Do you try to explain amino acid ratios, trans fats, and nitrogen waste? I usually say "just pretend I'm ve...

Re: Pastured Eggs

Why do you feel better about pasteurized eggs? Taste or bacteria?
I only soft-boil my eggs when I can't find organics and I'm uncertain about their quality. I think you could probably pasteurize them yourself and save a few bucks if you're going to be eating 6-8 of these each day.

Re: List of fish: the good, the bad and everything in betwee

There doesn't seem to be much of a market for raw trout, and thus not much information about consuming them raw. As with all inland fish, mercury poisoning is a serious concern when consuming trout that has spent much of its life confined to a small body of water. I would venture a guess that the mo...

Re: refrigerate nuts? peel brown thin layer?

Would refrigeration, then, be important in a humid climate?
After some reading, I am guessing that dark, sealed storage is most important, with temp up to 25C/77F being just fine.

The ultimate munch combo

I do some hiking and backpacking, so I've been trying to come up with easily prepared, satisfying, packable foods. I don't do the diet 100%, but I use it as a general guide. I've come up with one idea that combines some of my favorite munch foods: 1 bag potato chips, I like "krinkle" cut or kettle y...

Re: refrigerate nuts? peel brown thin layer?

really no refrigeration? I'm always afraid of rancidity in my brazil nuts, especially since some come to the store already spoiled. Brown coloration where the nut should be white is very bad tasting and probably rancid. Also, there are sometimes two "layers" of brown skin. I recommend always peeling...

Re: Celery

One interesting thing I just read about celery is that it very often contains pesticides in dangerous quantities, unless it is organic. So, if you must eat it, be careful!
