Peanuts instead of Brazil nuts?

Post by csamo001 »

Since peanuts have around 50% more proteins than Brazil nuts, wouldn't it be better to eat peanuts instead??
And as far as I can tell from the info in the book, I have to watch that the nuts are:
-raw
-unprocessed (if already shelled, only by hand)??

Peanuts aren't nuts (no pun intended ;)), so stick with Brazil nuts, on the same criteria you just mentioned.

:) I know that peanuts aren't actually nuts, but why is that important?

Like cashew nuts, which also aren't nuts, they are usually roasted in the shell. One of the reasons of roasting is that raw peanuts are difficult to digest for us, because we aren't supposed to eat them.

I've also heard toxic mold is particularly BAD with peanuts, relative to other real 'nuts'.

Farmers who grow/consume lots of peanuts have unusually high rates of cancer.

Yes, peanuts are notorious for being contaminated with aflatoxins. Just google this term and you will be surprised by the articles it generates.

Peanuts, botanically, are legumes, and therefore contain much the same complement of enzyme inhibitors that we find in lentils, chickpeas, etc. Not good!
