unshelled macadamia nuts
so if one cannot get access to unshelld brazil nuts (unless someone knows how to get them in canada?) are unshelled macadamia nuts the next best thing?
Re: unshelled macadamia nuts
From a different thread:
Very little aflatoxins.
Their protein quality is pretty bad: 33% versus 91% (Brazil nuts)
B1 varies greatly, from 220 to 3400 mcg, 280 on average. (1,000 mcg on average Brazil nuts)
Brazil nuts contain 36 times more selenium, 15 times more vit. E., 14 times more iron (down to 30% less),
4 times more B9, and 2 times more zinc.
Macadamia nuts contain 6 times more LNA, 3 to 5 times more B2, 12 times more B3,
3 times more B5 and B6 and less phytic acid (which is better).
You can also keep them longer than Brazil nuts, because Brazil nuts contain 25% linoleic acid (an omega 6),
which readily make the nut go rancid (oxidation).
They dont contain radium, as Brazil nuts do; no radioactivity. (so no real restriction)Kasper wrote:To buy macadamia's in shell in europe:

And this is a very good macadamia cracker, a bit expensive tough:

Are the things we should watch out for when eating macadamia's ?
How much can we eat a day ? A handfull like brazils, or more ?

Re: unshelled macadamia nuts
Is this like, if you eat 200 macadamia's from country X from farm Y, you will ingest on average 280 mcg vitamin B1/100g.B1 varies greatly, from 220 to 3400 mcg, 280 on average. (1,000 mcg on average Brazil nuts)
Some macadamia's will contain 3400 mcg/100g and some will contain 220 mcg/100g/
Or more like, if you eat macadamia's from country X from farm Y you will ingest 3400 mcg/100g on average
And if you eat macadamia's from country P from farm R you will ingest 220 mcg/100 g on average
In the nutrient calculator Macadamia ternifolia is used, which is poisonous and/or inedible, according to wikipedia.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macadamia wrote:Only two of the species, Macadamia integrifolia and Macadamia tetraphylla, are of commercial importance. The remainder of the genus possess poisonous and/or inedible nuts, such as M. whelanii and M. ternifolia; the toxicity is due to the presence of cyanogenic glycosides. These glycosides can be removed by prolonged leaching, a practice carried out by some Indigenous Australian people in order to use these species as well.
Re: unshelled macadamia nuts
Yes, some will contain 3400 mcg/100g, but most will contain less than 280 mcg/100g.Kasper wrote:Is this like, if you eat 200 macadamia's from country X from farm Y, you will ingest on average 280 mcg vitamin B1/100g.B1 varies greatly, from 220 to 3400 mcg, 280 on average. But this info is regarding Macadamia ternifolia, as you noticed (146 samples).

I hadnt noticed.
Its good that you did!
So, we can only use the info from the USDA database; Macadamia integrifolia, M. tetraphylla
which means that the info from Souci needs to be removed from the calculator.
In 3 samples they found 1.195 mg B1 on average (per 100 g)
Re: unshelled macadamia nuts
NOO!
I got the idea that the 10 kg of macadamia's I ordered, they are all bad.
They are all very dark with only a couple white spots.
How do you see if a nut is rancid/aflatoxins ??

Re: unshelled macadamia nuts
I think you can smell and taste rancidity. Macademias, like Brazil nuts, should ideally be ivory white (of course I mean the nuts themselves, not the shell), but in my experience if they're a bit darker than that it's still ok. If they're more yellow/brown then they're not good anymore. Every batch of nuts has some bad ones, but if most of them are bad, then you might want to take pics and ask for your money back.
Re: unshelled macadamia nuts
Oh my god, they taste so horrible!
I just found one good nut in 50 nuts ...!
I paid 130 euro for this.
I really hope I get my money back..

Re: unshelled macadamia nuts
They just send a email that they want my telephone number to talk about the refunding.
So, I hope this is a good sign.

Re: unshelled macadamia nuts
By the way the calculator still says Macadamia ternifolia.Kasper wrote:In the nutrient calculator Macadamia ternifolia is used, which is poisonous and/or inedible, according to wikipedia.
A tundra where will we be without trees? Thannnks!
Re: unshelled macadamia nuts
Source 1 is a combination of Macadamia tetraphylla and Macadamia ternifolia.
Source 2 only provides the nutrients in Macadamia ternifolia.

Re: unshelled macadamia nuts
Thanks for clarifying that!
