Excessive maternal orange intake & pregnancy disorders

Post by Emeira »

Currently I am pregnant and i have concerns regarding is this diet really safe during pregnancy, especially after finding this case report study:

"Many widely used foods and beverages are rich in polyphenol components, such as herbal teas, coffee, dark chocolate, oranges, tangerine, berries,
red apple, olive oil, soy beans, peanuts, and tomatoes. Excessive intake of these dietary components in late gestation may trigger alterations in the fetal DA dynamics. Fetal ductal constriction is reversed by the dietary restriction of polyphenol-rich foods [9, 10] . To date, there is no consensus about the amount of polyphenol consumption that could cause ductal constriction. In the current report, maternal intake of about
2 kg of fresh oranges had a constriction effect on DA that was totally reversed within 2 weeks after discontinuation of orange ingestion

Conclusion
It is concluded that restrictions on the maternal diet during the third trimester regarding excessive intake of polyphenol-rich foods such as oranges seems to prevent the harmful effect on DA."

Hi Emeira,
Congratulations!
A word of caution; it's a case study (one person).
One can find any correlation in case studies. I would like to think that any fruit, nuts and vegetable consumption might be linked to DA in case studies.
A very important factor would be the ripeness of the oranges (/fruits). Polyphenol composition is greatly affected by ripeness.
Juicing would also hugely decrease polyphenol ingestion.

Thank you :) I will continue to follow Wai diet during pregnancy, probably need to choose fruits that have less polyphenols: melons, avocados, kiwi, less amount of orange juice, because most of them are quite acidic or try methods (as centrifugal juicing) to reduce polyphenols count. Also regarding protein, is there any guidelines how much animal food should women eat on this diet while she is pregnant? Most of the time I eat raw mackerel marinated in honey with lemon juice, egg yolks and I want to add good quality of beef for iron stores, I have noticed that my ferritin drops very quickly if I eat little animal food.
