The History of Tomatoes

So I've only searched a little on this, anyone know how long tomatoes have been around? From what I've read they may have started growing originally in South America- then what- we altered them? Would they be included in a paleo diet? Are these genetically modified fruits?

Nowadays, probably very hybridized, unless you eat nothing but heirloom tomatoes.

Tomatoes are a nightshade, like peppers and potatos, supposedly to be avoided as they have arthritic tendencies. But I don't really care much for that logic.
