Glad I clicked this post. Wow, this brings me back to camping trips, and ecology class.
The Goldenrod Gall fly (Eurosta solidaginis)
If you are ever lost in the woods, (well technically lost in the fields beside the woods, goldenrods don't grow in forests),
and you are starving for some protein rich food,
search for the goldenrod (solidago) and look for those green bumps the size of a globe grape.
Open the gall and there should be a small white larvae (looks like a piece of cooked grain).
Most of the time the larvae is still there, but sometimes they emerge out and you are left with an empty shell.
Yum! I can just taste the larvae. (I've never tried one, but I've counted galls before in ecology class, and the larvae looks quite squishy, and some rods have 2-3 galls if you are lucky. You might be decimating their population though, if you attempted this as a serious diet, but be careful of pollen allergies, you might develop that if you handle goldenrods too much.)
